Sexy Keyboard Product Concept

This is an amazing concept that could revolutionize something as simple and ubiquitous as the keyboard. This keyboard works more like a touch screen than a keyboard, there are no actual keys. This means that it is not limited to standard keyboard set-up. It's more like an extra screen that happens to be touch-sensitive. It reminds me of the interfaces on the Enterprise in Star Trek The Next Generation.

Here are just some of the ways I could think of using this keyboard:

  1. Imagine you are playing a game and the unnecessary keys disappear, leaving only the keys you'll need for the game. It would also rename those keys to better coincide with what they are used for. Not only that, it could serve as an additional screen where you can see all the heads-up display options without having to change the main view. I'm sure the gaming industry would be the first to take full advantage of this.
  2. Part of the keyboard disappears and becomes a tablet for designers.
  3. No more pop-up menus blocking your work. As you can see from the picture below the keyboard can change to a swatch without having to cover your screen.
  4. No more having to exactly memorize keyboard shortcuts. When you load up Photoshop (or whatever program you use) the keys change and actually tell you their function instead having to memorize the list.

This keyboard concept was designed by Art. Lebedev Studio.

Hi readers!
I'm a student of Graphic Design in New York City and I live in Brooklyn. NY is a hub for design and my posts will try to focus on, but will not be limited to, design related things happening in NY, such as museum exhibits, architecture, events, local artist interviews, galleries, etc. I'm very much into technology and art and how they intersect to make multimedia art installations.

Hope you enjoy my posts!

Can touch-screen technology keep pace with some of us lightning-fast keyboarders? That would be my only concern. My experience with touch screen technology to date is that there is always some sort of a delay or there must be a very specific amount of pressure applied for it to respond.

Granted, you have to apply a specific amount of pressure on a normal keyboard, too - but the depression of the button is your mental cue that your information has been properly received by the computer.

Imagine having to type out someone's handwritten notes for something, and you're looking not at the screen, but at the handwritten note as you type and you're just hoping that you're applying the right pressure to the touch-screen keyboard.

I think this will become the norm in the future, but I foresee a lot of trial and error as it gets perfected.

I completely understand the desire to feel the tactile push of a key. I also had that worry as well. But maybe we have to re-think about the way we type in general. Like one of the commenters (Roobee) said, we should be open-minded. Humans are very adaptable. This could be the norm in 10 years and in the future, kids would look at the keyboards we use now as archaic and uncomfortable to use.

Also, as much as I love this concept, it is definitely not ergonomic and will continue to give people carpel tunnel syndrome.

This might be the future of our keyboards as well:

Looks pretty nifty, allthough I think it'll be rather unhandy when typing. I personally like/need the fact that you push down buttons when you type. I think you'll find yourself making loads more typos with that kind of thing...

Still, I'd like one :p

Mac is already developing a keyboard with "see threw" keys that is slated for 2010 and they've had the pattent on it for years.

for games the bottom rearanges for the control layout.

using qwerty and getting carpal tunnel? switching to davorak is simple and the letters switch up.

dynamic touch screen at the top above the function keys housing applications found in you doc. no more mousing to your doc, simply touch photoshop and it launches.

design skins for it etc etc.

its pretty sweet.

Is that the Optimus Maximus or a newer Version of Art Lebedev?

Man, this is a nice concept. A lot of you who have made comments are showing yourselves to be very inflexible...what, you can't get used to something new? A "click" feel or sound would be nice, but you would SEE the results on the screen wouldn't you? Geez, I am fairly old and a graphic designer who was taught on paper and pencil, I had to learn a whole new way of creating my craft and thinking, surely you young things can widen your ideas a bit.

I would definitely purchase one if they were affordable. :P

I would say it's really a nice design for a keyboard but I'm not sure if it would really work for all of us. If that's the keyboard of the future then the future isn't really that exciting at all. Is touch screen technology the best thing the future can give us? I don't think so.

I love the idea of having those "easy-launch buttons" on the left, but I'm not so sure how comfortable would a touchscreen keyboard be for writing code for instance.

great work! i want one of those !!!

If theres no tactile feedback... it probably wont work properly.

I figure something similar to the clickability under an ipod wheel would work nicely

why not instead build simply a Wacom sorta tablet that would be used as both a regular designer tablet and with implemented-features mentioned above (Funtion keys, photoshop workspace windows etc...)?

Seems easier to me and you could still keep a regular keyboard fo classic alphabet typing.

Much more feasible than the Optimus keyboard they did... If the touch screen is like the iPhone's in terms or responsiveness and multi-touch, I could see this being the norm within ten years.

It needs Haptic Feedback. That's the only real downfall.

Looks incredible — I would only have one gripe, and I imagine that it would be easy enough to solve. When I'm typing, or texting, or doing anything that involves me inputing something (data) using keys, I want a tangible response.

Now, maybe if they put some sort of force feedback buttons behind the on-screen buttons. There are phones that do that…

This wouldn't work

have you tried a touch screen cellphone? we need to feel the actual key, or else it just won't be the same

maybe a little vibration or something everytime you press a key

Wow, this is an AMAZING idea. You see it and inmediatly think "hey, why we didn't made this before?!?!". I'd really like to see something like this out there. This is way better than the optimus maximum that k3v mentioned.
I want one! I'll blog about this.

Zim 08/13/2008

Would take me ages to get used to the feeling of having no actual keys to press. Other then that, this surely is the future. Who wouldn't want to have a fully customizable keyboard? :)

There's actually another one on the market that got a lot of attention lately; the Optimus Maximus keyboard. A keyboard that uses tiny OLED screens on each key making it very customizable.

briliant, nicely done keep it up m8
