T-Mobile debuts the G1. Competition for the iPhone? Not really....

The T-Mobile G1 debuted today and the blogosphere is buzzing with reviews. The biggest reason is that it's the first phone to use the Google Android software. Could this phone really be competition for the iPhone? From what I've read so far, I don't think so. I myself don't have an iPhone (yet), I do however use T-Mobile and I'd rather get a hacked iPhone before getting the G1. But that's just me.

UPDATE 9/24/08: I wanted to add a video I just saw from Google's official YouTube channel. Scroll all the way to the bottom to see the video. And I wanted to give you a link to the official Adroid site.

Check out the official G1 site for an overview and details on the features.

Here are some reviews:

This is a nice chart from Gizmodo comparing some of the more important features:

And here are some videos of the G1:

Hi readers!
I'm a student of Graphic Design in New York City and I live in Brooklyn. NY is a hub for design and my posts will try to focus on, but will not be limited to, design related things happening in NY, such as museum exhibits, architecture, events, local artist interviews, galleries, etc. I'm very much into technology and art and how they intersect to make multimedia art installations.

Hope you enjoy my posts!

I am excited about this. I was close to cancelling my t-mobile plan to get the iphone but it looks like now I don't have to! I thought the phone was supposed to be called the HTC Dream? I like G1 much better.

At the hardware level, i think you underestimates the importance of the ‘compass mode’ on the G1. this is precisely what will allow true AUGMENTED REALITY applications to be developed.

Some japanese demonstrated at TC50 what future could be like with augmented reality on iPhone, but forgot to mention the iPhone DOES NOT have a compass. That's everyone at Techcrunch said their demo is a fake. Their application, on the other hand, could be easily developed on Android. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KgTwSXK_5dg

But you know what? Actually someone has already developped something like that for Android. The company is called Enkin. A team of 2 german geeks.
Check this out: http://www.enkin.net if you really want to see what future holds.

The difference is that Enkin has a WORKING PRODUCT and it's a true revolution. Google is in discussion to buy their company. Just imagine the possibilities for Google: create something similar to AdWords but in real life: businesses would pay to have promotions and ads displayed in real time on your phone through augmented reality with the G1. And this will come sooner than you think.

I just got my new iphone, and i am really happy with it. I was hoping that the google stuff might actually have some amazing new things... but its kinda the same as the iphone, just a little late to the market?

I know its open, and that is really cool, but at first look i think i'll just stick with the iphone, who knows maybe version 2 might have the bells and whistles?
